Ukrainian Championship: Spectacular Rook Sacrifice Brings Ruslan Ponomariov to Leaders

Ruslan Ponomariov became the sole leader of the Ukrainian Championship after the first two rounds. According to FIDE Ex-World Champion, he did not encounter any difficulties in neither of the games, both played with white. He has caused the newcomer of the championship Stanislav Bogdanovich the same problems he once had experienced himself in the match against Karjakin. "Thereafter, I decided not to play like that anymore, but my opponent was, perhaps, not so well prepared" - smiled the favourite of the tournament during his interview to press officer Anatoly Yavorsky.

The day before that, Ruslan defeated Pavel Eljanov in a manner that the expert of the championship, Grandmaster Spartak Vysochin called the game "one of the best in the career of the 16th World Champion." The protagonist on the other hand evaluates the incident more modestly: "To be honest, I did not do anything outstanding. Yes, there were some variations related to the sacrifice on the g6 in the end, but basically, White played naturally throughout the whole game."

The "natural" course of the game began with 19.Kh2, up to which, according to Ruslan, he was ready. And further on, the plan is simple: always attack.
