The 2nd round game between Gelfand and Caruana turned out to be tenser than the game of the world champions finished earlier. Genna Sosonko gave a special mention to White's move 17.Bd4!? while commentating the game live on Chess-News. After the duel Gelfand confirmed he has prepared the idea beforehand and that he finds it to be interesting. He further sacrifice of the pawn 21.f4!? was declined by Caruana after long hesitation.

Later Italian GM grabbed initiative and could even tip the scales in his favor.

When Vladimir Kramnik joined our live talk on Chess-News this was the position Caruana and Gelfand were thinking over. The computer suggests the following 35...Bg4 36.Nd4 cxd4 37.Bxg4 d3, which would bring White serious problems. Caruana missed his chance: 35....Bf5?, and Gelfand equalized easily: 36.Bc4 Bh6 37.Bd5 Qe3 38.Qd2 Qxd2 39.Nxd2 g5 40.Bxb7 gxf4 1/2
