The players of the same club ShSM-64, Wang Hao of China and Fabiano Caruana of Italy faced each other in Round 9 of the Grand Prix Tashkent. Chinese player beat his opponent to catch up him in the table.

Wang Hao chose the exchange variant of Slav defence, which turned out to be a quite effective "weapon": Fabiano failed to put together all the details of the structure that occurred on the board. Black should have kept b6 under control and beat on c5 with the bishop, instead of the knight.

The decisive mistake was made on 21st move: 21...а5?. After forced 22.b5 Nxb5 23.Qb3 Nc7 24.Qxb7 Qa8 25.Rb1 Rc8 26.Qxa8 Nxa8 27.Rb7 Bf8 28.Rfb1 Black was unable to hold the position. Maybe, Caruana should have tried playing on the kingside - for instance, by playing 21...f5.

Wang Hao missed an immediate win on 34th move 34.Rb8, however, this hasn't changed the final result of the game.
